Setting up a Proto-Neolithic Sandbox Part 2: Spirits of Place

 A series of posts about building a proto-neolithic Sandbox for PARIAH:

One change I made to the old map was the colour of clear land: I matched it to the base tone of the forest as I feel it shows the forested hills better.

The map is also mostly sea so I don't have to write up so much! You will recognise this as the southeast of England: while I'm drawing on that part of the world for inspiration, I'm not going to be trying to create a remotely historically accurate gameworld. I don't play on alternate earths, even if they might look like them.

Altar of the Ancestral Spirits

 This post addresses three elements within the PARIAH game that weren't fully explored in PARIAH VOLUME ONE:

  • The "ancestral relic" mentioned in the "creating the band" section.
  • This piece of text from the kickstarter blurb: "lay down your lie for the good of your allies, knowing that your spirit can assist the fledgling band from the beyond!"
  • The application of the "true name" in the game.

Setting up a Proto-Neolithic Sandbox Part 1: the Base Map

About 5 years ago I started getting back into RPGs and was delighted to find a thriving DIY scene utilising the editions of D&D upon which I had cut my teeth — B/X and BECMI. This was 2015 and of course the OSR scene was already long established (for some people it was just a continuation of the campaigns they'd been playing since 70s, 80s and 90s) but for me it felt fresh and exciting and more than a little weird.

Because I was very much alone in this labyrinth,  a lot of energy that would otherwise be spent on game prep — or actually playing — ended up going into innumerable worldbuilding experiments. One of the posts that I returned to again and again was this one by Bat in the Attic:

While it probably goes to depths that I don't think I would bother going to now, what's great about this huge series of articles is that it presents a formal procedure: follow the steps and you'll end up with a sandbox in which to drop a party of adventurers. 

I wanted to include something akin to this in the first volume of PARIAH but the limits of a 64 page zine put paid to that notion fairly early on and the project was sidelined....

Monsters, Beasts & Spirits

 One of the things about making your own RPG inspired by the original version of the world's most popular RPG is that in recreating even the broad strokes of it you bite off an enormous amount.

Thus, when... "detourning"... the famous expert set wilderness encounter tables, one is compelled to write an entire bestiary.



I haven't quite written that bestiary, but it's in the process of being written...

...and YOU can influence how that turns out!

The plan is to update the downloadable file each week until it starts to look like something real.
